The short answer

Start with three questions. Which council covers the address, what does the heritage area ask of an event, and which weeks are peak visitor periods?

The state portal links only a 2022 calendar, so ask Tourism Melaka about peak periods. The brief below keeps the answers together.

What to verify for Melaka

  • Which local authority covers the address? The Melaka state portal lists four: Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah (MBMB), Majlis Perbandaran Alor Gajah, Majlis Perbandaran Jasin and Majlis Perbandaran Hang Tuah Jaya (MPHTJ). Ask the venue for its full address, then check the council's own portal.
  • Does your event touch the heritage area? MBMB's portal lists the Stadhuys complex and Jonker Walk among heritage sites, and its notices include a temporary closure of Jalan Hang Jebat (Jonker Walk) on 16 February 2026 and an extension of the vehicle-free zone at Banda Hilir. Ask MBMB what applies to your event.
  • How do deliveries, loading and parking work near the venue? Ask the venue and MBMB whether the vehicle-free zone affects them. Do not assume it does not.
  • Which weeks are peak visitor periods? Ask Tourism Melaka (Bahagian Promosi Pelancongan) for its festival and visitor calendar for your event year. The state portal shows only a 2022 calendar link.
  • How do peak periods affect rooms for your delegates? Ask the hotels directly about availability on your dates.
  • Which state holidays fall on your dates? Melaka's 2026 list includes the birthday of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri on Monday 24 August 2026. Check the list for your event year, then test your dates with the host-city date checker.
  • How will delegates fly in? Ask the airport operator for current routes. Do not rely on news reports.

Heritage area or Ayer Keroh: questions for each address

The Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) gives an Ayer Keroh address on its contact page. MBMB's headquarters and an MPHTJ office also have Ayer Keroh addresses, so which council covers the MITC site needs to be asked, not assumed.

Four councils and a heritage zone

Melaka has four local authorities, and the heritage council publishes closure notices for its own area. In a neighbouring state the same question goes to a different authority.

For a heritage-zone venue shortlist see Melaka City. For the national picture see planning across Malaysia.

Worked example · Fictional example

A fictional association plans around the heritage area

Fictional organisation and figures, for illustration only.

Persatuan Fiktif Pustakawan plans a two-day seminar for about 100 delegates. Its first draft adds a welcome dinner near Jonker Walk.

The secretary reads MBMB's notices, sees that closures happen, and asks MBMB how they affect deliveries and parking. The committee also asks Tourism Melaka about busy weeks before it books rooms.

Handle it in-house, or bring in help?

Your team can usually handle this when

  • The venue is outside the heritage area and its access is clear in writing.
  • Your delegates are mostly local and your dates avoid known holidays.
  • A committee member can phone the council and Tourism Melaka.

Outside planning help earns its fee when

  • You want an event in or near the heritage area and are unsure what the council needs.
  • Your dates may meet busy visitor weeks and you need rooms for many delegates.
  • Your committee is outside Melaka and cannot visit before the event.

Want someone to chase these answers with you?

We can put these questions to the council, Tourism Melaka and the venue and keep the arrival plan in one place, or manage the event itself with the specialists it needs, within the scope we agree. Planning can be done remotely, and we can arrange on-site support and travel to Melaka when the scope needs it. Travel and accommodation are charged when part of the agreed scope. Send your dates, venue and what is still open, and we will reply with the level of support that fits and what it would cover.

Questions organisers ask

Which council do I deal with in Melaka?

It depends on the address. The state portal lists four local authorities. Ask the venue for its full address and check the council's portal.

When are the peak visitor periods in Melaka?

No current official statement is linked on the state portal. Ask Tourism Melaka for the calendar for your event year.

Does the vehicle-free zone affect events?

MBMB has announced an extension of the zone at Banda Hilir. Ask MBMB how it affects deliveries and parking on your dates.

Is MITC in the heritage area?

MITC gives an address in Ayer Keroh. Ask MITC and the councils which one covers it.
